Microlearning

Microlearning or nano learning refers to designing and delivering content to learners in the small, very specific bursts that are so familiar to Millenials.

Consider how you can take a traditional, class-long lecture and transform it into a series of short (3-5 minute videos).

  • 5 reasons why microlearning is beneficial to learners and educators (Shift’s eLearning Blog)
  • Benefit to learners: This not only matches the typical attention span of the current generation of learners, but it also gives them control over what to watch, when, and where. Millenials use video titles and any 1-sentence annotations as cues for the relevance of the content offered. The more concentrated the teaching, the more likely that students will pay attention to and learn from what you are working so hard to create for them.
  • Benefit to the instructor/team: While it takes more planning to create modular instruction in the form of short videos, the actual recording is very fast and the brevity of the end product makes it more realistic for you and your instructional-design team to close caption or transcribe the video segments, in compliance with ADA federal law and with principles of universal design.

The following Learning Avenue video goes over the basics of microlearning. This video is primarily conceived from an employee performance point of view, however, the overall concepts apply to our academic context as well.
